Originating in Germany more than 30 years ago, the Passivhaus standard of building is the ultimate in home’s energy efficiency. It will save energy use and reduce the amount of energy that homes cost-effectively need for space heating and cooling by up to 90 percent by eliminating thermal bridges, spots where heat can leak out or cold can leech in. This is achieved by using an airtight building envelope with uninterrupted insulation, high-performance windows and doors, intentional design and orientation to take advantage of solar gain and shading, and a mechanical ventilation system that recovers heat and provides a constant source of fresh air.
